To encourage more young statisticians to take an active interest in official statistics, the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS) is announcing its 2014 annual competition for the best paper in the field of official statistics written by a statistician under the age of 35. On 25-30 August 2013 the 59th World Statistics Congress will be held in Hong Kong, China.

The Special Topic Session (STS601) was organizes and chaired by Rimantas Juozas Vaicenavicius and held during World Statistics Congress in Dublin, 2011. The session summary is available on the Lithuanian Statistical Asociation website and the papers presented are published on the dedicated WSC website.

The Royal Statistical Society’s annual international conference took place from 3-6 September, 2012, at the Telford International Centre in the UK.
Plenary speakers at the conference included Hal Varian (Google) on Statistics in the New Information Society, Martine Durand (OECD) on measuring well-being and David Hand (Imperial College) on risk in business.  A full programme of invited sessions was planned by the organising committee – topics include bioinformatics, census outputs, experimental design challenges in industry, Fisher’s statistical legacy, genomics, networks, statistical computing, sports statistics and the Olympics, and understanding ageing in the 21st century.
